Falling With Style

Here is a collection of things that will help you pause when the rest of the world is spinning.

How much does your life weigh? Imagine for a second that you’re carrying a backpack. I want you to pack it with all the stuff that you have in your life… you start with the little things. The shelves, the drawers, the knickknacks, then you start adding larger stuff. Clothes, tabletop appliances, lamps, your TV… the backpack should be getting pretty heavy now. You go bigger. Your couch, your car, your home… I want you to stuff it all into that backpack. Now I want you to fill it with people. Start with casual acquaintances, friends of friends, folks around the office… and then you move into the people you trust with your most intimate secrets. Your brothers, your sisters, your children, your parents and finally your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend. You get them into that backpack, feel the weight of that bag. Make no mistake your relationships are the heaviest components in your life. All those negotiations and arguments and secrets, the compromises. The slower we move the faster we die. Make no mistake, moving is living. Some animals were meant to carry each other to live symbiotically over a lifetime. Star crossed lovers, monogamous swans. We are not swans. We are sharks.

Superheroes

Somebody once asked me why I go so far out of my way to help people I barely speak to. People that normally wouldn’t give me the time of day.

To tell you the truth I never even thought about the “why” until that moment, and I didn’t have an answer for them. The only thing I could come up with is this.

Why do people believe in superheroes? Is it because they have limitless power? Is it because they always do the right thing?

The answer is..no. Sometimes they don’t always do the right thing. The reason we believe in superheroes is for one reason and one reason only. They give us hope.

They give us hope in that one person, one singular being can change the way of the world and the circumstances of a horrible situation and completely flip it on it’s back and make everything okay.

We believe in them because when there is nothing left to hold on to, we know that in our hearts they will come at the last possible second to save us.

We believe in superheroes because they are that one being that can turn a miserable day into an amazing one, in the blink of an eye.

Then it occurred to me. What we need in this world, are not superheroes. We need people. We need good people, to go out of their way - even if it’s just a little bit. To give hope, to give meaning to friendships, to give love to strangers and not ask for anything in return.

If every single person just acted a little better towards others, there would be no need for superheroes. There would be no absolute misery. Everybody would be slightly happier. Maybe that is all it really takes to shed some light in this world.

And at that moment, I guess I had my answer. Maybe I can’t fly, or beat up 10 guys at once, or wear a cool costume. What I can do is promise that no matter what, if you need help and i’m around, I will do whatever I can to make sure you get it. Maybe it won’t be extraordinary, maybe it wont be perfect, but I know that I will be making someone happier.

I can’t really define love, I don’t think anybody can. There are no right or wrong answers. If you were to ask me what being in love felt like, I can really only tell you this. I can tell you it’s like knowing a superhero, because no matter what the situation may be, or how terrible it is, they know how to make everything okay just by being around, and suddenly, you feel okay.

Maybe that’s all I’m really trying to do. Give everyone a taste of what could be, give them some hope.

“But I never seem to really get tired of you..”

If you want to know where your heart is; look to where your mind goes when it wanders

If you want to know where your heart is; look to where your mind goes when it wanders

So where do we stand? The winter cold is unrelenting and the city is doing its best to stay warm. We’re 3000 miles away now, and yet I know each time I see the stars I can feel you looking at them too, like the sky was only meant for us. I’m wondering what you’re doing, where you are, if you’re happy. I still can’t quite figure these things out for myself, and maybe leaving was the best idea I’ve had.

It’s snowing hard now - the snowflakes are finally covering the dark canvas of the city streets. It’s cold here; empty almost. That’s how everything is without you around.

Maybe we’ll never be together, maybe this is how it’s supposed to be. Just remember each time you look up, I am too, and I will always be picturing you when I find the brightest light in the sky.
